Style with First Lady Michelle Obama

She sure does live up to the role of a fashion icon as First Lady. Always dressed from head to toe even with a great smile, Michelle Obama is an African American fashion icon.

First Recognized Black Fashion Designer

Elizabeth Keckley (1818-1907)

Born a slave in Virgina Elizabeth's mother taught her how to sew at an early age. Her outstading skills earned her money from family members and even her slave master. After buying freedom for herself and her sons she opened a dressmaking shop in Washington D.C. Her dressmaking impressed First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln and she was asked to design a gown for Mary's Inaugural Ball. President and First Lady Lincoln were so delighted by her dress that Elizabeth became Mary's personal dressmaker.
